Restoring a 17th-century finca, stone by stone

When the owners of Son Roig first called us, they asked whether to sell the estate as it stood or restore it first. We suggested they do neither until we had walked every room with an architect.

Starting with the walls

The original dry-stone walls had survived three centuries and one bad renovation in the 1970s. Undoing that renovation took longer than anything else, and every stone that came out went back in.

The result is a house that feels unchanged, with modern plumbing, heating and light hidden in plain sight. It is also, not by coincidence, worth considerably more than it was.
